ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) _ That crack that has closed a 20-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway north of Asheville has become a tourist attraction for those on foot or bike.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported the crack is more than 300 feet long, six inches wide and several feet deep.
Some people are walking two miles from where the parkway is closed just to see the crack.
The road is closed just north of Asheville to near Mount Mitchell State Park. The road is open to pedestrians and those on bicycles until next week, when temporary repairs on the cracks begin.
A crew from the Federal Highway Administration began core drilling tests this week to try to determine the cause of the problem. But officials think the heavy rains caused the crack.
