NC NAACP to announce voter registration campaign

Posted Wednesday, June 12th 2013 @ 6am

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP is honoring those who served the civil, human and labor rights movements on the anniversary of the killing of organization field secretary Medgar Evers.
Evers was shot June 12, 1963, by a white segregationist, Byron De La Beckwith, who wasn't convicted until 1994.  The state chapter of the NAACP will remember Evers and others at what it's calling ``Wednesday Witness.''
NAACP chapter president the Rev. William Barber will hold a news conference today in front of the legislative building. He plans to announce a voter registration campaign that begins today and ends Aug. 28, the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous ``I Have a Dream'' speech at that march.
