Raleigh to pay for projects through 'crowdfunding'

Posted Monday, July 29th 2013 @ 10am

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ The city of Raleigh will be asking residents to fund various public projects through donations.
The city will be trying to raise money for projects such as bicycle racks, bus shelters and greenway benches through ``crowdfunding.''
The idea would have citizens finance through donations projects that are usually funded through taxes.
Assistant city manager Dan Howe says projects being considered are things the city wants but can't currently fund. He says they can't be too big or too small.
He says ideas will initially come from the city, but if crowdfunding is successful, officials could ask residents for ideas to build into the city budget.
