Removed NC county official alleges discrimination

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) _ A New Hanover County commissioner removed from office by his fellow commissioners is alleging employment discrimination because of his autism.
Brian Berger has filed an employment discrimination claim with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. It alleges the county violated the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
Berger says he was subjected to harassment and intimidation and fired because of his disability. The county attorney says the county will defend itself against the complaint.
The commissioners used something called an amotion proceeding to remove him in May by a 3-2 vote. It had been nearly a century since a North Carolina official had been removed that way.
The commissioners said Berger showed erratic behavior and threatened county workers. Berger is appealing his dismissal.
