MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) _ Waters in the Pamlico Sound and upper Core Sound along the North Carolina coast are being closed to large-mesh gill net fishing.
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries says the closure begins Wednesday an hour before sunset because of recent instances of sea turtles getting entangled in the nets.  In gill netting, fish swim into nets but pass only part way through. As they struggle to escape, the net entwines their gills.

Since late May, two green sea turtles have died while three live green sea turtles, one live loggerhead sea turtle and two other live turtles have been snagged in nets.
The closure will remain in effect through Sept. 1.
