Celebrities React To Hurricane Maria, Send Prayers To Caribbean Islands

Celebrities are reacting to Hurricane Maria after the category five storm caused catastrophic and widespread damage to the Caribbean island of Dominica on Monday night. The massive hurricane, which briefly lost intensity, is currently headed towards Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. See stars’ tweets and reactions to the storm below.

The Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, documented the powerful impact of Hurricane Maria on social media as it made landfall and subsequently tore apart his home. “The winds are merciless! We shall survive by the grace of God,” Skerrit wrote on Facebook. He continued, “My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding.” Thankfully, the Prime Minister later said he had been rescued. He went on to add, “My focus now is in rescuing the trapped and securing medical assistance for the injured. We will need help, my friend, we will need help of all kinds.”

Among those commenting on the hurricane and sending prayers to those in the storm’s path is Ellen DeGeneres, who tweeted, “Sending love to the people in the path of #HurricaneMaria. Please do everything you can to stay safe.” Cher similarly wrote, “PRAY 4 HURRICANE MARIA 2 BE DOWNGRADED, PRAY 4 ISLANDS 2 BE SPARED, PRAY 4 U.S. 2 BE SPARED.” Richard Branson offered, “British Virgin Islands needs the world’s attention now – helping local communities with Hurricane #Maria prep, survival & recovery.” And Mark Ruffalo said, “Praying. Let us turn our thoughts and prayers to action for these island nations and people after the storm. Hurricane relief and #ClimateAction.”

As it was reported, Hurricane Irma, the most powerful Atlantic storm ever recorded, battered Florida and the Caribbean islands earlier this month. The category five storm devastated Antigua, Barbuda, St. Barts and a number of other small islands before gradually making its way through the Florida Keys, prompting the state to order evacuations. Gossip Cop will continue to update as more celebrities react to Hurricane Maria.
