New Florida Law To Ban Marriage Before Age 17

A new law is going into effect in Florida forbidding anyone under the age of 17 to marry and declares that a 17-year-old can only marry someone two years older.

The bill passed due to the efforts of 47-year-old Sherry Johnson.  In 1971, Johnson was raped and impregated by a church deacon at the age of 11.  Johnson was later pressured by the church and her family to marry the man.  Johnson says this law would have "changed her life".
