High School Students Plan Pro-Life Walkout

Following the nationwide walkout by students to demand gun control in the wake of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida a group of California students is hoping to organize a similar event to promote pro-life policies. Brandon Gillespie said he was inspired to organize the event after Rocklin High School placed his history teacher Julianne Benzel on administrative leave for questioning "whether there was a double standard over protests on school grounds between gun control and abortion."

“If a group of students nationwide or even locally decided, ‘I want to walk out of school for 17 minutes and go in the quad area and protest abortion,’ would that be allowed by our administration?”

The students are using to build support for the walkout, which will take place on April 11th at 10 am. Students would leave class for 17 minutes, the same amount of time their peers left when protesting against gun violence.

A school official said that Rocklin High School principal plans to meet with Gillespie, which has upset some students at the school.

Naeirika Neev is the editor of the school paper and said the anti-abortion protests don't have anything to do with the school.

Abortions aren’t really anything that has to do with school or students here

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America told the Washington Times that "pro-life students deserve “the same respect and accommodation that anti-gun activists experienced” when they staged a walkout on March 14."

“Having opened to door to student-lead walkouts as a way to express a political or cultural viewpoint, schools cannot shut that door to pro-life students who also are moved by the loss of life and horrific realities of the toll of abortion.”
