Authorities in New York have been conducting a massive manhunt, trying to find a West Point cadet who did not show up for a military skills competition over the weekend. The cadet, who has not been identified, was last seen at the military academy on Friday (October 18) around 5:30 p.m.

Officials said that he took an M4 selective-fire carbine but did not have any ammunition for it. They do not believe he poses a threat to the public but are worried that he may be a danger to himself.

Authorities used drones, K9 units, and a helicopter to search the areas around West Point. They also enlisted the help of the Coast Guard to search up and down the Hudson River.

“I want to thank the local and state law enforcement agencies and emergency services for their tireless support,” said Lt. General Darryl Williams, the academy superintendent. “We will continue to search with all means possible, on and off West Point. Safely locating the Cadet remains our focus and number one priority.”

Officials have increased military patrols around the base and at sporting events.

“West Point is operating under normal conditions with an increased force protection status,” the academy said. “We have increased Military Police patrols at sporting events and across the Academy as a precautionary measure and to assist in safely locating the missing Cadet.”
