Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Might Not Be Spending Christmas In The US

The Royal Family Attend Church On Christmas Day

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made quite a stir when it was announced they would not be spending Christmas with their fellow royals. Queen Elizabeth hosts an annual Christmas celebration at her Sandringham estate each year, which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have attended together for the past two years. Harry, of course, has been spending Christmas with his family at Sandringham for most of his life. This year, however, they're trying something different.

While many were quick to accuse the Sussexes of breaking royal tradition, Kate Middleton and Prince William have decided to opt out of the Sandringham celebration in order to spend the holidays with the Middleton family in previous years. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month," a palace spokesperson said in a statement about Harry and Meghan's holiday plans. "Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess' mother Doria Ragland."

Not only did the palace spokesperson point out that it's totally normal for the Sussexes to spend some of their holidays with Meghan's side of the family, the statement also revealed how the Queen feels about their Christmas plans. "This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen," the statement reads.

Since Harry and Meghan are spending Christmas with Doria, it was assumed their celebrations would take place in Meghan's native Los Angeles. The Sussexes, however, never confirmed they'd be jetting over to the United States for Christmas. Royal reporter Omid Scobie recently revealed Harry, Meghan and Archie spent Thanksgiving "privately with close family," however, it's unclear if they were actually in the U.S. for the holiday.

Fans also began to speculate that Meghan and Harry spent Thanksgiving in Canada after their Instagram post acknowledging the holiday included a maple leaf. This wouldn't be surprising, though, because Meghan lived in Toronto for seven years before moving to London to be with Harry.

Omid also revealed that Meghan and Harry would be abroad "until Christmas," which some have taken as indication they would return to London and spend Archie's first Christmas at Frogmore Cottage. Perhaps Doria plans on traveling to London with them, as well. Wherever Meghan and Harry decide to spend Christmas, we hope it's a very merry one!
