28 Spring Breakers From Texas Test Positive For COVID-19 After Mexico Trip

Public health officials announced that 28 people who traveled to Mexico during spring break have contracted COVID-19. Authorities in Austin, Texas, said the students were part of a group of 70 people who charted a plane to Cabo San Lucas about a week and a half ago. Some of the students returned to the United States on commercial flights.

"Austin Public Health and UT Health Austin and University Health Services have made contact with every spring breaker onboard the plane using flight manifests from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The 28 confirmed cases are self-isolating at this time. Others are under quarantine while being monitored and tested," the Austin Public Health Department said.

Four of the students who tested positive were not showing symptoms at the time. Most of the people on the trip attended the University of Texas, Austin, which has moved all classes online during the global coronavirus pandemic.

"The incident is a reminder of the vital importance of taking seriously the warnings of public health authorities on the risks of becoming infected with COVID-19 and spreading it to others," the university said in a statement.
