Gov. Cooper Announces Phase 2.5 Reopening Plan That Eases Restrictions

Governor Roy Cooper gave an update on the plans to reopen North Carolina in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday.

After remaining in Phase 2 for several weeks, the new executive order moves the state into Phase 2.5 and will go into effect on Friday at 5 p.m.

Phase 2.5 eases restrictions on many business such as museums and aquariums which will now be able to reopen at 50% capacity.

Gyms and fitness centers will be able to open at 30% capacity as heavy breathing during exercise may expel more germs, so less people are permitted. Playgrounds will now be open as well.

Limits on mass gatherings have increased to 25 people for indoor events and 50 people for outdoor events.

Businesses such as bars, nightclubs, and movie theaters are to remain closed.

Gov. Cooper said he is pleased with the current trends in numbers and encouraged residents to continue fighting the virus. "North Carolinians, most of you are showing you know how to fight this disease, and most of you should be proud of yourselves. Remember, every time you wear your mask or social distance, you're helping our statewide numbers so that we can ease restrictions. You're protecting people known and unknown, you're saving lives, and you're slowing the spread of this virus," he stated.
