Free Money! N.C. Has Millions To Give Out And Some Of It Could Be Yours

Did you know that you could be missing out on some free money? Each state has a website for residents to search for lost money that may be owned to them. The unclaimed property may be the result of a business, government office, or other source that owes you money that you haven't yet collected, according to the U.S. Government website.

Unclaimed property can come in many forms, including checking and savings accounts, stocks, payroll checks, refunds, contents of safe deposit boxes, and more.

So how can people find their missing money?

Residents in North Carolina can simply go to NCCash.com, search their name or business, and scroll through the list of names to see if they have any unclaimed property. As many people could share names, narrow down the search by city and zip code. Those who have moved from one state to another can also use multi-state database missingmoney.com.

According to the state's website, the Treasury Department has nearly $800 million in unclaimed property and has returned around $30 million to residents across the state since July 2020.

"With the NCCash Match program, unclaimed property owners do not need to take action to receive their money," the website reads. "The Unclaimed Property Division will research records and identify qualifying claims of $250 or less. Each wee, notification letters will be mailed to claimants, and a check will be issued in 6-8 weeks."
