A North Carolina man's lunchtime decision led him to win a $1 million prize courtesy of the state lottery.
Kevin Poole, a supervisor at an asphalt plant, was recently picking up the lunch tab for he and a co-worker when he decided to try his luck in the North Carolina lottery.
"The electrician I work with bought me lunch yesterday," the Franklinville resident told lottery officials. "I told him, 'since you bought mine yesterday, I'll buy yours today.'"
That choice led Poole to Don Lee's Grocery and Grill in Willow Spring, where in addition to lunch he picked up a $30 ticket for the $10,000,000 Colossal Cash game.
"They got really good cheeseburgers," he said. "After I finished eating my cheeseburger and onion rings, I scratched it."
Poole claimed his prize at lottery headquarters on Wednesday (September 1) where he could either take the $1 million prize as an annuity of $50,000 per year for 20 years or get a lump sum payment of $600,000. He chose the latter, bringing home a total of $424,509 after taxes.
So what does he plan to do with his newfound winnings?
"I'm over excited now," he said. "I'm building a house, and I'd like to buy more land. I want to build a motocross track out back for my sons to ride on."
