Paul McCartney closed out the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special over the weekend with an Abbey Road medley, playing "Golden Slumber," "Carry The Weight" and "The End." Now, fans are speculating that Macca's choice to finish the performance with "The End" was an intentional nod to Chris Farley.
The Beatles star famously made an appearance on "The Chris Farley Show" sketch in a 1993 episode where he was also the musical guest. In the memorable skit, Farley nervously interviews McCartney, asking questions about his career including one about the lyrics to "The End." “‘In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.’ Is that true?” he asks. When McCartney says that he does indeed believe it's true, Farley looks over the moon. The beloved actor died less than five years after that episode aired.
Those same lyrics just happened to be the last ones sung during the special. It could be a coincidence, but given the amount of songs McCartney could have played, many believe it was a conscious decision to quietly honor the late comedian. The legendary singer-songwriter's performance marked his fifth on the iconic sketch comedy show and first since 2012.
