The new research was published on Monday in the journal 'Nature Astronomy.' It suggests an underground "patchwork" of extremely salty lakes near the south pole of Mars exist. Researchers say that there is a larger lake spanning about 15 miles, as well as several smaller surrounding lakes. 'We are much more confident now. We did many more observations, and we processed the data completely differently,' Elena Pettinelli, Professor of Geophysics Roma Tre University, via NBC News. 'This lake could be similar to salty, sub-glacial lakes on Earth that have been detected near the poles. The lakes on Earth are host to immense microbiological life. The new research suggests that the underground lakes on Mars might also be host to similar forms of life.'
