On Tuesday, the Recording Academy announced that it would be expanding the number of nominees in its top four categories from five to eight. The AP reports that the move was prompted by the general feeling that the hip-hop and R&B genres have historically been underrepresented in the categories of album of the year, song of the year, record of the year, and best new artist. Bruno Mars won album, song and record of the year at January's ceremony, while Alessia Cara was named best new artist.
