Nike says its $250 Vaporfly running shoes literally make people run faster than they would in an inferior shoe. This might sound like a typically outlandish marketing claim, but an in-depth analysis conducted by The New York Times found that the claim is actually true. The Times looked at half-a-million marathon and half-marathon runners, and found that those wearing Vaporflys ran 3 to 4 percent faster than similar runners wearing other shoes, and 1 percent faster than the next-fastest racing shoe. That 4 percent difference shaves six minutes off a three-hour marathoner's time, so the difference is significant.
