An Arizona man has died after self-medicating in an attempt to ward off the coronavirus.
After reading that researchers suspect chloroquine phosphate might be useful in treating COVID-19, the unidentified man and his wife ingested the drug, police say. While the drug is already used to treat malaria, it's also a main ingredient in fish tank cleaner -- which is what the couple took, according to authorities. The man died, while his wife is in critical condition, health officials say.
Although President Donald Trump mentioned the drug's potential during a news conference last week, the FDA has since noted it has not approved chloroquine phosphate for the treatment of the coronavirus. Dr. Daniel Brooks, the medical director for Banner Poison and Drug Information Center, says, "Given the uncertainty around COVID-19, we understand that people are trying to find new ways to prevent or treat this virus. But self-medicating is not the way to do so."
