Durham County Orders 'Stay at Home' -- Wake County Is Next

A chairman for the Wake County Board of Commissioners announced that the county will be issuing a stay-at-home order "very soon." Greg Ford said on Twitter that the county is working on a draft declaration and will make an announcement at a press conference Thursday.

Durham Mayor Steve Schewel says the stay-at-home order is legally enforceable order by police. The order is in effect starting Thursday at 6 p.m. through at least April 30, but is subject to be revised.

Schewel told media that the earlier the city takes action, the sooner things can get back to normal.

"This is our window to intervene," Schewel said. "If we are going to stop the spread of the virus, this is our window."

"This is not something to fear. It is something to take control of. Don't think of yourself as a victim of this coronavirus, think of someone who's empowering yourself to stay safe."
