Tom Hanks might save the world with his blood.
Since recovering from COVID-19, Hanks has donated several pints of blood plasma. It contains antibodies produced by the immune system that specifically recognize and destroy the coronavirus.
On Wednesday, wife Rita Wilson shared on social media a photo in the donation center. Tom Hanks tweeted a photo from last week’s contribution to science. He gave much more than pint of plasma that’s the color of mucus. He joked that donating was “as easy as taking a nap.”
Doctors successfully treated some critically ill patients with antibodies from people who recovered from COVID. Also, scientists believe those antibodies hold the secret to developing a vaccine. (New York Post)
More than 120,000 Americans have recovered from COVID and have in their blood a potential key ingredient to a life-saving vaccine.
The American Red Cross is taking donations.
